LONDON: Chris Brown left Southwark Crown Court on Monday, October 26, 2026, with an eight-month prison sentence suspended for 12 months rather than immediate jail time. The 37-year-old singer had faced up to three years behind bars for his role in a February 2023 altercation at Tape, a private nightclub in the Mayfair district of London. Judge Tony Baumgartner imposed the suspended term after Brown pleaded guilty to affray in July; prosecutors dropped the other charges as part of that resolution.
Court footage showed Brown striking music producer Abraham Diaw, a former friend, twice in the head with a tequila bottle on the dance floor. The confrontation lasted about 20 seconds and continued as Diaw tried to move away. Diaw received hospital treatment for head and knee injuries before being discharged. Prosecutors argued Brown initiated the violence and played a leading role in the attack. Brown also received a suspended sentence for his friend and vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, who performs under the name HoodyBaby. Akinlolu also pleaded guilty to affray and received a four-month prison term suspended for 12 months.
During sentencing, Judge Baumgartner noted the incident involved serious violence and pointed to the danger of repeatedly swinging a glass bottle at someone's head. The judge also weighed Brown's guilty plea, stable employment, charitable activities and recent conduct in deciding against immediate imprisonment. He stated that celebrity status did not entitle Brown to preferential treatment. The court also considered Brown's earlier criminal convictions, including a 2009 guilty plea to felony assault involving his then-girlfriend Rihanna. Brown's defense attorney, Sallie Bennett-Jenkins, told the court that the singer deeply regretted the incident and apologized to those present, and she described his professional responsibilities, family obligations and charitable work.
Brown's eight-month sentence remains suspended for 12 months, meaning another offense in that period could result in incarceration. Supporters gathered outside the courthouse during the hearing, with some traveling from Italy and the Netherlands. Brown left the building in a dark jacket, sunglasses, a baseball cap and a face covering, encountering cheering supporters and photographers. One person challenged him about his history of violence as he arrived at court.
