A new childcare and early education center in Lakewood began enrolling children this week. The facility, named Sunshine Enrichment Academy, is located in the lower level of Grace Presbyterian Church at 1659 Rosewood Avenue. The center serves children ranging from 6 weeks old through 12 years of age.

The academy operates Monday through Friday. Hours are set from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Families can reach the center by calling (216) 413-9759, emailing sunenrichacad@gmail.com, or visiting www.sunenrichacad.com. Staff are currently available to schedule tours and discuss individual child needs.

Jerina Smith founded the academy. She is a licensed Intervention Specialist with nearly 25 years of combined experience in childcare and special education. Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in special education and a master’s degree in autism spectrum disorders. Her career began shortly after high school, where she worked in childcare before nannying for twin boys. Their unique learning styles inspired her to pursue special education.

Smith stated that finding appropriate care for her own daughter was more difficult than anticipated. “As both a parent and an educator, I knew the kind of environment I wanted for her, but I couldn’t find it,” she said. She created the academy to provide the specific setting she would trust for her child. The program combines play-based learning with early academic experiences. It also includes sensory-friendly spaces and opportunities for indoor and outdoor gross motor development.

The curriculum is built on the principle that children learn best through play, exploration, and meaningful relationships. Smith noted that the program recognizes different learning styles to help children build confidence and independence. “We strive to ensure every child is seen, heard, and understood, even before they have the words to express themselves,” Smith said. The center aims to support the development of individuals who make a difference in a world shaped by differences.
