Two people were found shot to death inside an Oberlin home on Oct. 28, and a suspect is in custody.
Oberlin Police responded at 8:57 a.m. to the Oberlin College Conservatory lot at 77 E College Street after a report of a vehicle smoking and possibly on fire. Officers tried to locate the registered owner, identified as Daniel Jones, 31, of Ashland, Oregon, to conduct a welfare check. Jones was found in the 200 block of Shipherd Circle at 10:19 a.m. and taken into custody. Charges against him are pending.
When officers went to 33 South Pleasant Street to check on Jones' family, they found a man and a woman dead inside. The man was on the first floor, the woman on the second. Both had gunshot wounds. The Lorain County coroner's office responded to the scene.
Oberlin College and Conservatory identified the man as Pipo Nguyen-Duy, a professor of studio art and photography who taught at Oberlin for many years.
The college issued a shelter-in-place order for the campus. Police lifted the order after confirming there was no danger to the campus or community. The investigation is ongoing, police said.
