Jesús de Miguel, the striker for CD Tenerife, died on Tuesday, November 3, after suffering a cardiac arrest during a match. The club confirmed his death that morning after he collapsed on the field earlier in the day. The incident occurred after he received a blow to the chest from FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during play.
De Miguel’s partner, María, and their daughter, Carla, were seated in the stadium stands when the collision happened. According to reports from El Español, the pair watched medical personnel attend to the player from a short distance. The club did not release a specific statement regarding the family at the time of the initial announcement.
Fernando Román, a defender and close friend of the deceased, provided details about the family’s immediate situation. Speaking to the program ‘Vamos a ver’ on Tuesday, Román said he and his partner spoke with María throughout the afternoon and night. She was alone in the hospital until relatives arrived in the evening.
Román described the period before family members arrived as difficult. He noted that De Miguel’s parents traveled from their home in Navahermosa to Santa Cruz de Tenerife after learning of his serious medical condition. The family remained in contact with the players’ circles in the hours following the collapse.
The two men had played together for a club in Salamanca and lived in Madrid, where they spent time with their respective families. Román said he was in shock and struggled to believe he would not see his friend again. He mentioned that they had recently discussed plans to travel to Disney with their children before the incident occurred.
Román posted a tribute on the social media platform X, describing De Miguel as a family member rather than just a friend. He highlighted the striker’s humility and work ethic, noting that he rarely got into arguments and made the people around him happy. The defender recalled a past trip to Punta Cana with their partners and the time spent with their daughters.
In his message, Román stated that he and his partner, Tamara, were devastated by the loss. He addressed the deceased directly, telling him he would be missed and wishing him rest. The post included photographs of the two friends together. De Miguel leaves behind María and their one-year-old daughter, Carla.
The collapse happened during a competitive match between CD Tenerife and FC Andorra. The medical team responded immediately after the player fainted on the pitch. The club announced the death on the morning of November 3, following the events of the previous day’s game.
