Airbnb has activated its anti-party technology in Cleveland and other U.S. cities for Halloween weekend.
The system screens reservations to identify bookings at higher risk for disruptive gatherings. This is the fifth year the company has used the tool during the holiday season.
In Cleveland, the software deterred approximately 145 people from booking entire homes for Halloween 2025. The company bans disruptive parties worldwide but enforces the rule more strictly during peak times.
Javier Hernandez, a senior communications manager for Airbnb, explained that the algorithm analyzes hundreds of signals to flag potential risks. Factors include last-minute bookings and the distance between the booker and the property.
Airbnb states that parties are rare on its platform. In Ohio, only 0.11% of reservations last year resulted in a party report. Northeast Ohio experienced two fatal shootings at Airbnb properties in the past year. In August, two teenagers died in a shooting at a property in Lorain. In November 2025, an 18-year-old died and nine others were hurt at a party in Bath Township that attracted nearly 300 guests.
Hernandez said the company prioritizes the peace of mind of neighbors, hosts, and guests. He noted that anyone who believes their reservation was blocked incorrectly should contact Airbnb directly.
