John Goodman spoke about how his body feels unfamiliar after losing more than 200 pounds. The actor said his appearance is now so different from what he expects to see that it sometimes surprises him. He described his current physique as deformed due to the rapid weight reduction.
Goodman discussed these changes during a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, which is hosted by Josh Horowitz. He explained that the weight loss was a major life change, but adjusting to the visual result remains a challenge. He admitted that he is still trying to get used to his face and overall look in the mirror.
The actor recalled a specific moment on the HBO series The Righteous Gemstones that illustrated his discomfort. He initially rejected a scene that required him to appear in a state of undress. He told the host that he worried his body would look too altered on camera. He said, 'I thought I would have to appear naked in that scene and I said: "I don't know. My body is very deformed from having lost all this weight."'
The production team found a solution to film the scene, and Goodman noted that they made it work. The series ran for four seasons from 2019 to 2025. His comments offer a rare look at the practical difficulties actors face when their bodies change significantly between projects or during long runs.
Goodman’s path to this point involved decades of struggling with alcohol and his relationship with food. He stopped drinking in 2007, but he later admitted that he started eating compulsively. This led to him gaining weight until he reached nearly 400 pounds. He described the cycle of losing weight and gaining it back as exhausting.
In an interview with The New Yorker, he detailed the toll of these fluctuations. He said, 'I would lose 60 pounds in a summer, gain it all back, 70 pounds, 80 pounds, and it became exhausting.' He eventually decided to break the cycle to protect his health and career. He acknowledged that his previous weight may have limited some professional opportunities, though he was already well-established in the industry.
To manage his weight and health, Goodman changed his daily habits and began exercising. He also underwent gastric surgery to help control his intake. The process was not without side effects. He said the changes left him anemic and caused him to lose a layer of subcutaneous fat. As a result, he often feels cold.
His physical recovery has been complicated by other injuries. He has had two knee replacement surgeries and suffered a hip fracture after a fall in London. Currently, he focuses his workouts on strengthening his body and improving his balance. He aims to prevent future injuries while maintaining his current weight.
Goodman said he has to force himself to go to the gym regularly. He believes staying active is essential to keeping the weight off. He mentioned that injectable weight-loss medications would have been helpful during his most difficult periods, but he does not use them now. He continues to ignore external comments about his appearance, viewing them as a normal part of his profession.
His story highlights the physical demands of maintaining a public persona after major health changes. From his early fame in The Flintstones and Coyote Ugly to his recent roles, his body has undergone drastic shifts. He remains focused on his current health routine to stay stable.
