Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won the presidential election in Brazil and will serve a fourth term as the country's head of state. The former president defeated his far-right challenger, Flávio Bolsonaro, in a vote that concluded the current electoral cycle. This victory marks a major political shift following the intense campaign season.

Flávio Bolsonaro declined to acknowledge the defeat immediately after the results were finalized. He requested that the official results be annulled. In doing so, he followed a pattern set by his father, Jair Bolsonaro, the previous president. Jair Bolsonaro had also refused to accept his loss to Lula four years ago. That prior dispute led to a failed coup attempt and a subsequent conviction for Jair Bolsonaro.

The younger Bolsonaro cited a ruling by a Supreme Court justice as the basis for his challenge. The justice had decided to extend voting hours for the election. Flávio Bolsonaro argued that this change altered the voting process in a way that invalidated the outcome. He did not provide other specific reasons for the request to cancel the results.

Tom Phillips, a reporter based in São Paulo, assessed the political impact of the refusal to concede. Phillips stated that the response from the Bolsonaro faction was expected but likely to have limited effect. He noted that world leaders were already recognizing Lula's victory. Phillips expressed doubt that Bolsonaro could successfully overturn the result through legal challenges.

Phillips described the win as the culmination of Lula's fifty-year political career. Lula is noted as the first elected working-class leader of Brazil. According to Phillips, Lula has helped millions of citizens escape poverty during his previous terms in office. The reporter characterized the career as incredible, though sometimes controversial.

In a separate development in the West Bank, Israeli forces sealed off the city of Hebron. The city has a population of 250,000 people. The closure followed a gun attack on a military checkpoint on Friday. Two Israeli soldiers were killed in that incident. The neighborhood of Farsh al-Hawa, which is closest to the attack site, was flattened by military operations.

The Hebron municipality reported that 370 families were displaced from their homes. This accounts for nearly 2,000 people who lost their residences. The Israeli army stated in official comments that the displaced population left voluntarily. Yousef al-Jabari, the mayor of Hebron, accused the state of collective punishment. He said the government dragged people from their houses and prevented media access to the district.

Al-Jabari claimed that the government was using Palestinian land to displace people for political goals. He mentioned that the city and the mosque were closed during the operations. Palestinians in the occupied West Bank do not vote in the upcoming Israeli elections, but their lives will be affected by the outcome of that vote.
