Democrats possess an 8-point advantage among likely voters on the generic congressional ballot, according to a new NPR/PBS News/Marist poll released Monday. This margin suggests the party is favored to gain control of the U.S. House of Representatives in the upcoming midterm elections.

NPR's Domenico Montanaro noted that while a Democratic loss in the House appears unlikely, the Senate remains a toss-up. He warned that patience will be required for outcomes in many races, as it is improbable that winners will be clear by election night in close contests.

The poll identifies key issues influencing voter sentiment. One in three Americans reported facing financial hardships, while four in ten said their personal finances are worsening. For Democrats and independents, preserving democracy resonates as a primary concern. Immigration ranks as the top issue for supporters of the MAGA movement.

President Trump's approval rating stands at 40%, a slight improvement from previous measurements. Despite this minor uptick, he remains unpopular among the general electorate. The survey indicates that while a potential Democratic wave exists, signs suggest it may be limited in scope.

In related election developments, a federal judge is hearing arguments in the Trump administration's bid to compel California to set aside ballots from voters it alleges may not be citizens. This action follows an appeals court's decision last night to decline the administration's request to intervene earlier in the process.

Trump announced a $1 million reward for tips on voter fraud that lead to a conviction. The White House states its efforts aim to secure elections, but Eric McDaniel of NPR pointed out that credible evidence of voter fraud significant enough to affect U.S. election outcomes has never been found. Democrats and election officials are preparing for similar accusations.

Isisraelis are voting today in an election that marks the first choice of leaders since the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attacks. Voters will decide whether to keep Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu or replace him with Gadi Eisenkot, a former military chief. High turnout is expected, with many Israelis abroad flying in to participate.

NPR's Ruth Sherlock reported that by Wednesday morning, the side securing the most seats in Parliament should be known. However, the vote count could continue for days, and the prime minister will not be determined until after days or possibly weeks of negotiations between the parties.
