Romania’s Intelligence Service announced on Monday that it has identified a sabotage network coordinated by Moscow, which it believes caused a fire at an industrial site in central Romania in September. The blaze occurred near a state-owned weapons company. Officials stated that the network’s coordinators assigned it specific targets, including state and private weapons production facilities and other sites of military and industrial interest.

Organized crime prosecutors are currently seeking the extradition of three individuals linked to the case. Two Belarusian suspects were apprehended in Germany, while a third Ukrainian suspect was detained in Poland. Romanian authorities confirmed that all three men were part of the Russia-coordinated group.

President Nicusor Dan has described the nation as a target of a hybrid war aimed at destabilizing countries that support Kyiv. Romania shares a land border with Ukraine that spans more than 600 kilometers, or 370 miles. Dan has cited various forms of aggression, including drone incursions, cyberattacks, disinformation campaigns, and sabotage acts.

This latest accusation follows a month of heightened tension on NATO’s eastern flank. Dan said Russia is escalating attacks after a series of drone strikes on cargo vessels in the Black Sea. At least eight ships have been hit off the coasts of Romania and Bulgaria in the past three weeks, leaving 34 sailors dead or missing.

The diplomatic response remains measured but firm. Russia’s embassy in Bucharest could not be reached for comment outside business hours. Moscow has repeatedly denied similar accusations in the past. A year ago, Poland and Romania detained eight people suspected of involvement in a separate Russian plan to send exploding parcels to Ukraine.
