Topeka police have booked Adam Schwegman on 16 charges following a day of violence that left at least three victims with stab wounds and two more injured.
The first attacks occurred along S.W. Fillmore, where Schwegman stabbed two people. Police records link the incident at that address to an allegation of rape. Schwegman then moved further up the same road and broke into two homes. Four children, including a four-month-old, were inside one of the houses. Officials confirmed the children were not hurt during the break-ins.
The violence continued on a nearby street, where a third person was stabbed. The sequence of attacks ended at Ward Meade Park. A 70-year-old woman was attacked there by Schwegman. Ron Hubbard was standing in the park with a friend when he noticed Schwegman. Hubbard said the man looked strange to him. Hubbard and his friend confronted Schwegman because he had been at the park earlier.
Hubbard said he decided to act to stop the man from running away. He threw his leg out to trip Schwegman. Schwegman landed in the grass, and his knife fell beside him. Hubbard kicked the knife onto the sidewalk while his friend held Schwegman. Schwegman escaped the pair, but police arrested him shortly after.
Schwegman appeared in court for the first time on Thursday, Oct. 29. A judge set his total bond at $3 million. He is now in custody pending further proceedings.
Hubbard said he hoped his actions prevented further harm to others. “Well, if you see something bad, try to help stop it. I wish we could have got to it before this happened,” Hubbard said.
