An estimated 4,000 people packed the Discovery Center in Clayton County, Georgia, on Wednesday evening to hear former President Barack Obama. The event was part of a campaign tour aimed at boosting Democratic candidates ahead of the midterm elections. Jon Ossoff and Keisha Lance Bottoms, who are both on the ballot in Georgia, joined Obama on stage. Senate candidate Raphael Warnock also appeared at the rally, which took place just south of Atlanta.
Obama opened his remarks by addressing the national attention given to his recent comments about the White House. Over the weekend, he compared the renovated building to a Cheesecake Factory opened by Saddam Hussein. The remark generated a quick response from President Donald Trump and members of the administration. Obama told the crowd that the reaction proved a lack of seriousness. “These are not serious people,” he said. “And we’re all paying the price for their lack of seriousness.”
The former president accused the government of mobilizing a whole-of-government response to the joke. He argued that the administration focused on the restaurant comment instead of addressing rising prices. “They mobilized a whole-of-government response to that joke, not to inflation, but to that joke,” Obama stated. He pointed to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who recently appeared outside a Cheesecake Factory location. Obama suggested this action showed the administration was going out of its way to answer his quip.
Obama also defended the choice of the restaurant as a comparison. He noted that he is a father of two daughters and could not have navigated their childhood without visiting the chain. This comment pushed back against critics who said the joke looked down on ordinary Americans. He shifted the focus of his speech toward affordability and what he described as corruption within the current administration.
Obama accused President Trump of using the office for personal financial gain. He told the audience, “We have never seen a president so intent on selling favors.” He questioned how wealthy candidates view the impact of their policies on everyday families. This theme ran through the evening as other Democrats took the stage to criticize the current administration.
Sen. Jon Ossoff criticized the construction of a new White House ballroom. He suggested that Democrats could pursue accountability if they regain control of Congress. Keisha Lance Bottoms, running for governor, focused her attack on her Republican opponent, Rick Jackson. She described Jackson and Trump as wealthy figures who benefit financially while ordinary taxpayers carry the burden. Jackson is a billionaire healthcare executive.
Sen. Raphael Warnock closed the segment by raising concerns about cuts to Medicaid and SNAP nutrition assistance. He framed the upcoming election as a question of the country’s values. He argued that the vote reflects the nation's responsibility to one another. Obama’s appearance in Clayton County was part of a wider effort to support Democrats across the state. Trump continued holding his own rallies elsewhere in the country during the same week.
