Lakesha Womack, the Democratic candidate for North Carolina Congressional District 14, was served with a felony warrant at a campaign event on Oct. 11.
Polk County Sheriff’s Office deputies executed the warrant during the event. Authorities said the warrant dates to 2020 and charges Womack with failing to return a hired motor vehicle worth more than $4,000.
The arrest warrant details a 2019 Toyota Corolla rented from Budget Car Rental in October 2019. Womack did not return the vehicle by the agreed-upon date. The car was reportedly worth $20,000.
A criminal summons was issued in January 2020 but was not served until this month. Officials did not immediately explain why the warrant sat unserved for so long.
Womack is challenging Republican incumbent Rep. Tim Moore for a seat representing Gastonia, Shelby, Morgantown, and parts of far south Charlotte. Her campaign did not directly address the felony warrant in a statement but responded to attack ads from Moore’s campaign.
“Over the past few weeks, allegations involving me have drawn significant media attention and attack ads from Friends of Tim Moore. Candidates for public office should be held accountable and voters deserve transparency,” the statement read. The midterm general election is scheduled for Nov. 3.
