Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., is recovering in a hospital in Baltimore after suffering a stroke. His office confirmed the diagnosis on Sunday. Murphy, 53, was admitted to Johns Hopkins Hospital for further monitoring.

The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon while Murphy attended a hockey game for his son. According to Allison Herwitt, his chief of staff, the senator began experiencing numbness in his arm. Staff members took him to a nearby local hospital, where doctors identified the stroke. He was then transferred to Johns Hopkins for additional care.

Herwitt stated that Murphy is responding well to the treatment. She added that he is expected to make a full recovery. The statement did not specify how long he would remain in the hospital.

Murphy has been an active presence in Washington this year. He served as a campaign surrogate for Democratic candidates during the midterm election cycle. He also recently returned from a tour of the Middle East. After that trip, he warned that President Trump might escalate military actions against Iran following the midterms.

He is one of several legislators to face serious health issues in recent years. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., spent months in a hospital and rehabilitation program this year. Rep. Tom Kean, R-N.J., missed months of work while receiving treatment for depression. In 2022, three other Democratic lawmakers were hospitalized for strokes. They were Sen. Ben Ray Lujan of New Mexico, Sen. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, and John Fetterman, who was a Senate candidate at the time.
