A double decker bus struck a building at 17:20 GMT on Saturday, closing multiple streets in New Mills. Derbyshire Police reported that the vehicle hit the structure at the junction of Union Road and Market Street.
Paramedics treated several people for minor injuries at the scene. Officers established a cordon around the area on Saturday evening. The restriction was necessary due to concerns over a potential gas leak caused by the impact.
Cadent, the local gas distribution company, responded to the incident. Elliott Nelson, the network director for the gas emergency service, explained that the bus damaged a service pipe. He noted that this type of pipe carries gas from the main road supply into a specific building.
Nelson stated that the team isolated the supply to the damaged pipe to make the area safe. His crew checked all surrounding gas assets and found no additional impact. Cadent confirmed on Sunday that the supply was isolated.
Police declared Union Road, Market Street, and St Mary's Road open on Sunday. A structural engineer inspected the affected building and declared it safe. The force also confirmed that the bus had been recovered from the site.
The roads remained closed for approximately 24 hours before traffic resumed normal flow. The cordon was lifted once the gas company verified the site was secure.
