Cuyahoga County residents planning their holiday shopping this year expect to spend significantly less than they did last year. According to a report released by NerdWallet, the average person now plans to allocate roughly $880 for gifts. This figure represents a 21% drop from the previous year, when individuals expected to spend just over $1,100 on holiday presents.

Kim Palmer, a personal finance expert at NerdWallet, attributes this shift to rising prices across many consumer categories. She notes that inflation is forcing households to cut back on more than just gifts. Many families are also reducing travel plans and choosing to stay closer to home during the break. Palmer explains that financial stress is the main driver, compelling people to find ways to celebrate the season while lowering their total outlay.

To handle these tighter budgets, Palmer suggests several practical steps. She advises shoppers to create a list early and spread purchases out over several months rather than buying everything in December. She also warns against relying too heavily on buy now, pay later options. While these services allow people to spread costs, they create debt that must be repaid, which can become difficult once January arrives.

Additional advice includes tracking items on a gift list and waiting for sales, as prices often dip as the holidays approach. Palmer recommends avoiding the use of emergency savings for holiday shopping. She urges consumers to stick to their lists and resist impulse buys to keep spending under control.

The report highlights that people are actively managing their finances in response to higher costs. By planning ahead and limiting cash outlays, many are adjusting their holiday expectations to match their current financial reality.
