The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 on Wednesday to claim their first World Series championship in franchise history. The win ended a 57-year wait for a title and capped a five-game series that concluded on October 28. Milwaukee’s last appearance in the World Series was in 1982, when they lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games.

Television ratings for the 2026 series did not match recent years. Estimates show an average audience of 11.82 million viewers across the Fox network. Game 3, a 10-1 victory for Milwaukee in Tampa, drew the lowest audience at 8.33 million. Game 5, the clinching win, attracted the highest audience at 14.22 million. These numbers fall below the 2025 average of 15.49 million and the 2024 average of 15.1 million, both of which were won by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The lower viewership aligns with the financial profiles of the competing teams. The Brewers have a payroll of $146 million, ranking 19th in Major League Baseball. The Rays have a payroll of $95 million, ranking 28th. The Brewers represent the smallest market team in the league, generating the lowest local commercial and television revenue. The Rays sit in the middle of the league regarding market size. This matchup marked the first World Series between two of baseball’s smallest spenders in 35 years.

Other US sports leagues reported higher audiences this year. The New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 4-1 in the NBA Finals, drawing an average of 20.58 million viewers. Game 5 of that series became the most-watched NBA Finals Game 5 since 1998, with an average of 24.54 million viewers and a peak of 33 million. In football, Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in extra time during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. That match averaged 62.8 million viewers across Fox and Telemundo, setting a record for a football match in the United States.

The National Football League remains the most-watched sport in the country. An estimated 125.6 million viewers watched the Seattle Seahawks defeat the New England Patriots 29-13 in Super Bowl LX. That total ranked as the second-highest Super Bowl audience in history, behind the 127.7 million viewers who tuned in for Super Bowl LIX in 2025. The National Hockey League drew an average of 5.2 million viewers for the 2026 Stanley Cup, which the Carolina Hurricanes won by defeating the Vegas Golden Knights 4-2.

Baseball also adjusted its international plans for 2026. The league initially scheduled two games for the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays at London Stadium on June 13 and 14. The games were cancelled due to scheduling conflicts with the venue and television partners. West Ham United played their final Premier League match at the stadium on May 24, leaving insufficient time to convert the field to baseball. The league also could not schedule games later in June because Fox lacked available broadcast slots during the FIFA World Cup.

The NFL expanded its international presence in September with a regular-season game in Melbourne. That match drew 100,021 fans, making it the seventh most-attended regular-season game in NFL history. The NBA continues to play regular-season and preseason games in international cities, including Paris, Abu Dhabi, and Mexico City.
