Navajo Nation officials stated that recent flooding in the Shiprock area has caused damage to 500 homes and forced 200 residents to evacuate.
More than 150 individuals remain in shelters as floodwaters recede, leaving families to address immediate structural damage and shortages of essential supplies. One local family reported going five days without access to running water while waiting for assistance.
Virginia Kirk, owner of The Mod, converted her business location off Highway 64 into a donation hub to coordinate relief efforts. The center accepts goods from local residents and distributes them to affected households in Shiprock and smaller neighboring communities. Kirk noted that the disaster compounded existing regional difficulties, stating, “We have so many challenges here, and then when a disaster comes through, like the flooding, it kind of piles on.”
Relief efforts have also attracted volunteers from outside New Mexico who are bringing in material aid. Arthur Gonzalez traveled from Kerrville, Texas, to Shiprock with a trailer loaded with donations. Gonzalez cited the July 2025 floods in his home state as the motivation for his trip, explaining, “I do this out of my own heart, or we do this out of our own hearts.”
Kirk described the influx of outside help as a demonstration of cross-border support. She summarized the effort by saying, “It’s just community helping communities.” The Mod continues to serve as the primary point of contact for families seeking items and for donors looking to provide assistance in the Shiprock corridor.
