Jordan Love completed 30 of 41 passes for 288 yards, and the Green Bay Packers held on for a 27-19 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Thursday night at Lambeau Field. The win moves Green Bay to 5-3 on the season. Carolina remains 3-4.
The game featured a chaotic sequence of events in the fourth quarter that threatened to erase Green Bay's lead. Love threw three touchdown passes to Tucker Kraft, Matthew Golden, and Josh Jacobs. He also threw one interception. Jacobs carried the ball 21 times for 39 yards and scored on a one-yard run and a four-yard reception.
Carolina trailed by 17 points at the start of the fourth quarter. Bryce Young connected with Jalen Coker on a 26-yard touchdown pass on fourth down with 5:37 left in the game. The play cut the deficit to 27-19. Young’s subsequent two-point conversion attempt was incomplete.
The Panthers recovered the ball at their own 45-yard line. They punted on downs at midfield with 2:41 remaining. Carolina had one final possession from its own 20-yard line with 22 seconds left and no timeouts. Cornerback Dani Dennis-Sutton sacked Young, ending the drive and the game.
Love’s interception occurred in the end zone on Green Bay’s possession in the opening minute of the fourth quarter. Zakee Wheatley picked off the pass intended for Golden. That turnover gave Carolina the ball in a position to mount a comeback.
Both teams suffered injury setbacks during the contest. Green Bay receiver Christian Watson left the game after a 53-yard catch in the second quarter. He was transported to a hospital for evaluation of a chest injury. Carolina cornerback Will Lee suffered a hamstring injury while diving on a tackle during the same play.
The Panthers already have three cornerbacks on injured reserve. Akayleb Evans is out with triceps and knee issues. Mike Jackson is sidelined with a groin injury. Jaycee Horn is out with a quadriceps problem. Carolina offensive guard Corey Bullock also hurt his quadriceps in the second half.
Green Bay honored former president and CEO Bob Harlan during halftime. His name was unveiled on the northeast facade of Lambeau Field. Harlan served as president and CEO from 1989 to 2008 and died on March 5 at age 89. The Packers will travel to New England on November 8. Carolina will host Denver on the same date.
