Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut suffered a stroke on Saturday while watching his son play hockey. His office reports that his prognosis is excellent. The incident has renewed attention on how to identify stroke symptoms early to prevent permanent damage.

The American Stroke Association promotes the acronym BE FAST to help people recognize warning signs. Murphy experienced the symptom represented by the letter A, which stands for arm weakness. He felt numbness in his arm during the game. His staff said he acted quickly to seek medical care. This action corresponds to the letter T, which stands for time.

The other letters in the acronym describe different physical changes. B stands for balance loss, which includes dizziness, trouble walking, or a sudden loss of stability. E represents eye changes, such as blurred vision, double vision, or losing sight in one eye. F indicates face drooping, where a person might have an uneven smile or numbness on one side.

S stands for speech difficulty. A person experiencing a stroke may have trouble talking, slurred speech, or difficulty repeating simple sentences. If these symptoms appear, the association advises calling 911 immediately. Getting to a medical facility quickly is essential for survival and minimizing long-term effects.

A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted. This can happen if an artery is blocked or if a blood vessel bursts. Brain tissue that lacks oxygen can suffer permanent damage. This damage often leads to long-term disability or death. Other symptoms include severe headaches, confusion, and numbness on one side of the body.

Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. The American Heart Association says more than 162,000 people died from the condition in 2023. Murphy is 53 years old. His case demonstrates the effectiveness of rapid medical intervention following the BE FAST guidelines.
