California voters face a final window to participate in the 2026 midterm elections, with all polling locations and ballot drop boxes closing at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Officials emphasize that while many residents have already voted, those who have not must act before the evening deadline to ensure their ballots are processed. The state’s secretary of state reported that over 6.4 million of the 23 million registered voters cast ballots by Sunday.

In Los Angeles and Orange counties, voters may visit any designated vote center within their county to cast ballots in person. These locations operate from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day. Residents who join the line before 8 p.m. retain the right to vote, even if the process extends past the closing time. Those arriving after the deadline will be turned away from the polling site.

Voters who choose to submit physical ballots by hand must sign and date the envelope before placing it in a drop box. The deadline for this method is also 8 p.m. Tuesday. The Los Angeles County voter website, locator.lavote.gov, provides maps for both vote centers and drop boxes. Orange County residents can find center addresses at ocvote.gov/elections/vote-center-locations.

Unregistered eligible citizens can use the state’s conditional voter registration program. This allows individuals to register at a county elections office, polling place, or vote center and cast a ballot simultaneously. However, these ballots are not counted until the registration application is verified and approved by election officials.

Mail-in voting remains an option but carries stricter timing requirements. Ballots must be postmarked by Tuesday and received by local election offices within seven days of the election. Election officials advise against this method on Election Day due to the risk of rejection. They recommend that voters bring mail ballots to a post office to obtain a postmark immediately.

During the June primary election, the attorney general’s office reported that 148,241 mail ballots were rejected. Nearly two-thirds of these rejections occurred because ballots were postmarked after Election Day or failed to arrive at election offices by the deadline. This statistic underscores the administrative hurdles associated with late mail submissions.

After voting, residents can track the status of their ballots through the state’s Where’s My Ballot tracker at california.ballottrax.net. Early voting figures show nearly 1.4 million Los Angeles County voters and roughly 600,800 Orange County voters had already cast ballots before Tuesday. Election results will begin appearing shortly after 8 p.m., though officials note that partial results will be released initially.
