Democrats won control of the U.S. House of Representatives, according to a Fox News graphic displayed around 11 p.m. Tuesday.

The victory marks the first major legislative change since the 2024 presidential election. It confirms a widespread rejection of the current administration across multiple states.

The shift in power is clear in the Senate race results. Republicans lost their seat in Ohio, a state that has historically been a stronghold for the President. They also appear likely to lose the Senate race in Michigan.

Democrats broke through in Texas, where they had not won a statewide race in more than 100 contests since 1994. They also won the Senate seat in South Carolina. Iowa and Kansas saw similar Democratic victories. Kansas has not seated a Democratic senator since the Great Depression.

In southwestern Kansas, counties that backed Donald Trump by about 35 points two years ago voted narrowly for the Democratic candidate in the U.S. Senate race. These areas include Finney County, Seward County, and Ford County.

Voters cited a range of issues for their decisions. In South Texas, the focus was on immigration raids. In Kansas, the Iran war and its impact on diesel and fertilizer prices played a role. In South Carolina, the choice of the Republican candidate was a factor.

The election elevated younger Democratic candidates who ran against the status quo. Jon Ossoff won in Georgia. James Talarico won in Texas. Abdul El-Sayed won in Michigan.

The President spoke to Fox News just after midnight. He described the outcome as a point in time and said there was a mood in the air.

Elon Musk spent nearly $200 million to keep Texas red. The state still shifted to the Democrats. The results suggest the political map is less fixed than it was a decade ago.

In Minneapolis, voters placed I voted stickers on a lamppost at a memorial for Alex Pretti. Pretti was a registered nurse shot by federal agents during a protest last winter. The stickers covered the pole as ballots were counted.
