Mexican authorities have pursued Gómez Mont for over five years. In 2021, officials issued arrest orders against her. The orders alleged she was involved in a scheme to divert public resources. They also cited simulated contracts, the use of shell companies, and money laundering.

Mexico's Attorney General's Office issued a statement on X. The office said the detention resulted from collaboration with the U.S. government. It confirmed that an active arrest order exists for her alleged role in tax fraud. Mexican investigators have also linked her to organized crime and illicit financial operations.
Mexican officials have not yet announced if they will file a formal extradition request immediately.
