A bucket of red paint was dumped on the sidewalk outside the Biddeford, Maine, office of Sen. Susan Collins on Monday night, marking the second time in a month that the building has been defaced. The incident occurred the night before voters head to the polls.
According to Katie Brown, Collins' chief of staff, saboteurs wrote "BLOOD on her HANDS" in crimson letters on the pavement in front of the entrance. Brown told reporters that the action was part of a series of attempts to intimidate the senator and her team. She described the tactics as disturbing but noted that her staff remained undeterred and was already back at work.
The office is located near the site of a July shooting where an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer killed 26-year-old Colombian national Johan Sebastián Guerrero. Days after that incident, protesters entered the front door of the Biddeford office while chanting "vote her out." In September, vandals had previously spray-painted the phrase "Trump whore" in red on the building's door.
Troy Jackson, the former state senator challenging Collins for the U.S. Senate seat, released a statement condemning the latest act of vandalism. "There’s no place for this in Maine," Jackson said. "Vandalism and intimidation are wrong, full stop." He added that Collins and her staff should be able to perform their duties without anyone defacing their workplace.
Biddeford police are currently investigating the Monday night incident. Collins' campaign confirmed the investigation, though neither her team nor Jackson's campaign provided further comment immediately following the event.
