A 17-year-old girl died in a multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of US 30 and State Route 511 in Vermillion Township on Saturday evening. Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers arrived at the scene around 7:13 p.m. to find the teen's 2010 Hyundai Elantra involved in the collision.
Preliminary reports indicate the driver was traveling southbound on State Route 511. The Elantra failed to stop at the intersection's stop sign and entered the path of a 2013 Jeep Wrangler driven by Maximus Davis, 25, of Jeromesville. Davis was traveling westbound on US 30 when the impact occurred.
The force of the crash pushed both vehicles across the median into the eastbound lanes. A 2006 Acura TL driven by James Cavera, 19, of Bowling Green, hit the Jeep while traveling eastbound. The Acura left the roadway, and two other vehicles struck debris left in the lanes.
The 17-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A 17-year-old male passenger was airlifted by Metro Life Flight to Akron City Hospital with serious injuries. Davis was taken by Mifflin Fire & EMS to Ohio Health Mansfield Hospital before being flown to Grant Medical Center. Cavera was transported by Jeromesville Fire & EMS to Ohio Health Mansfield with serious injuries.
All drivers and passengers in the vehicles were wearing seatbelts. The Ohio State Highway Patrol said drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash. The investigation remains open. Ashland County Sheriff's Office and several local fire and EMS units assisted on the scene.
The crash closed parts of US 30 during the response. Traffic officials expect the area to remain under investigation for several days.
